Help !!
I was with eon for my gas (£54.00) and British gas for my electric (£28.00).
I was in the process of researching a switch when eon knocked on my door and if i switched to them i would reduce my electric to £25.00 plus having a further discount as they would then be my sole provider.£79.00 minus 10% roughly £71.00.
I WAS HAPPY.
I recieved a letter off them last week (my sons kindly delivered to the magazine pile so opened yesterday!!)saying they were increasing my bill to £127.00 per month.......PER MONTH ???
The meter readings have been given and they have all my details from British gas so why ?? The first payment came out on the 1st already.....can they do this ??? Offer a cheaper deal then bump the price up ??

Your first mistake was believing anything you were told by a doorstep energy sales person from any supplier. You probably told them how much DD you were paying each month which is usually a meaningless figure. The company have done some calculations and think you will use more and have changed your DD, it is in the t&c's you signed but you can dispute it.

Depending on the tariff you are on E.On are usually pretty reasonable so which tariff did you sign up to. Put your useage, in kWh annually, into one of the energy sites and that will give you a good comparison of the charges from the different companies. Alternatively work it out yourself.

Hi ELIZA_D - Welcome to the realisation that when buying utilities, you are swimming with sharks.
I'm afraid the golden rule is to never, never change your utility supplier on the basis of the spiel of doorstep caller, a phone call, an approach in a store or on the street.

    So what to do.
Forget what your D/Debits are - It's annual consumption that counts.
Go thro' the bills from your previous supplier for at least the last year and add up how many Elec units you used, and how many Gas kw. The chances are the the the bills won't cover exactly 365 days, so work out how much you used a day on the last bill and use this to adjust your use up or down to make up 365 days.

Armed with these annual consumption figures, you can visit "switchwithwhich", who will not only show the alternative cost from most suppliers, but also list exactly what the the terms are and the annual cost from Eon on your present tariff, divide this cost by 12 and that should be your D/Debit level - When you have this write to Eon with the figures demanding they either set your D/D's at this level, or give you written justification for the D/D levels they are chargeing

Be aware that the tariff you have been "Sold", may well have a lock in period for a year
    Good Luck

Remember that your FixOnline8 tariff has 2 stage pricing; the first 900kwh per year are at about 28p and everything else (other than night usage if youre Economy7) is about 15p, so if your total kwh for the year is 3000, then youve got 900@28 + 2100@15

Working in Credit Control for an energy supplier I come accross this a lot. Your DD amounts are meaningless unless they are based on your actual usage. Use your bills to estimate what you use per month in kWh and then use the unit prices to work out how much that equates to financially. Be aware of any arrears on your accounts as these will be taken into consideration when setting DD levels as DDs will normally have to cover both arrears and future usage.

There are rules from OFGEM regarding the setting of DDs, but I'm not familiar with them as my job doesn't often involve setting DD levels that include future usage I'm afraid.

    Hi ELIZA_D,

I think the advice you’ve had so far is pretty accurate, it does sound like you were quoted based on monthly Direct Debit amounts rather than kWh.

I’d do as dogshome suggests and ask for us to provide you with figures on how the new Direct Debit amount has been calculated, this will prove to you if it’s right or wrong.

If it is correct and you are unhappy with the amount and/or the details of the Track and Save tariff, get your annual consumption figures and pop them into a comparison website to find a suitable tariff for your requirements.
