Myxomatosis

My pet rabbit of 4 years sadly passed away two days ago, in my arms
She had Myxomatosis but had been fighting it for a few weeks and had started to recover well.
Her eyes were fine when checking on her the night before but by morning they were sealed closed
She had breathing problems and by the time I got the phone to ring my local RSPCA hospital she got alot worse, when I knew she was about to die
She passed away in my arms after stopping breathing.
I have been upset the past few days over it, specially knowing the suffering she was in during her final hours
Why did someone invent such a curel disease, I know it was to get rid of wild rabbits but how could someone kill rabbits in such a painful suffering way, it broke my heart as she slipped away knowing the pain she clearly was in

Awww Sassy
I am soo sorry to hear of your loss. Myxo is an awful disease - the odd bunny does pull through it, but it is quite rare. At least you were there with your lil bun while she passed on - she will have known she was loved, and she was excused the stress of a trip to the vets, which may have had the same result.
Myxomatosis wasn't invented as such, but was knowingly, and illegally introduced to our shores many moons ago in order to try and curtail the wild rabbit population - this disease is not nice, and i too cannot understand why anyone could knowingly submit a livivng thing to such a disease!
I understand the need for wild rabbit control, but there are surely better ways to do it!
Grrrrr!
((((hugs)))I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Posting this thread got me tearful again
The pain she was clearly in in her last few minutes was so painful for me to watch, she cried at one point.
I too am just so glad she didn't go alone, when I went to see her and she heard me she tried to get up but just couldn't
I wish there was something i could have done for her, but like I have read and been told since, she would have been put to sleep if taken to a vet.
What also upsets me is she tried so hard to fight it, till the end, I held her bottle near her mouth while she was in my arms and she had a little drink before she just couldn't breathe anymore
I only know one thing, I never replace her - she was a house rabbit and will be missed so much0 -
Oh Sassy - we all have those special pets - those ones that mean the world to us, and losing them is undescribable to a non pet lover!
You were with her till the end - she will have appeciated that.
And she will be waiting for you at rainbow bridge;

So sorry to hear of you losing your darling bunny. I love bunnies & know how absolutely gorgeous & utterly delightful they can be. She died with you there loving her to the end.
Myxo is horrendous. I have often seen wild bunnies crouched at the side of country roads clearly blind & suffering & feel terrible for their plight. I hate the people (probably men) who came up with the bright idea to release this disease.
Sending you hugs & my thoughts. Be kind to yourself and allow the grief to wash through. It doesn't last forever & you will be left with happy memories.

I'm so very sorry, sassy.
Thinking of you xx0 -
I am so sorry for your loss but think it was nice that you were with her during her last few minutes.
However, I do feel that I have to point out that there is a vaccination for rabbits against myxomatosis and if you decided to get another rabbit it would be worth doing this to give protection.
If your rabbit did then still get myxomatosis it would turn a fatal illness into a treatable one and the rabbit would more than likely survive.0 -

Absolutely. My two have the myxo jab every six months and the VHD jab once a year - it is so worth it.0 -
Sassy,I'm so sorry for the passing of your beloved pet bunny.
As to Mixy, the local islands near me,The Copeland Islands, had a thriving bunny population in the 70's which was wiped out from the desease & quarentined.0 -
Thank you everyone for all your kind messages that I have just read
As she was a house rabbit it makes it harder, I'm use to hearing her drink from her water bottle, which is just silent now
As she was a house rabbit and didn't come into contact with other rabbits it never crossed my mind to get the jab for her, I wish i had now
I won't be replacing her, I would feel very selfish doing that to her.
The person who spread the Mixy must be a very very nasty person, to put poor defenceless rabbits in so much suffering and once they get it there isn't any hope for them without the jab.
Thank you again to you all who left messages for me, it has offered me some comfort
I always hold with me that she is no longer suffering by such a evil infection and is now at rest0
