No Bill for a year

Moved into a new flat last August. Tried to work out the electric supplier but with no luck.

The previous owners said it was Scottish Power, who said that it wasn't.

Rang up the regional board as well who couldn't tell me who the supplier was. I gave some details and they said they would get back to me, but no-one did.

To be honest I then got annoyed and a bit lazy and let it slide. I thought a bill might turn up but it is approaching a year and nothing.

What would the best plan of action be? I don't mind paying for what I owe if it can be done in installments, would this be possible?

Cheers.

I get promised over the years several times that someone will get back in touch they didnt, so why didnt you ring them back

Ringing them once doesn't dissolve you of liability to pay

Quickest way to find out who your electricity supplier is to contact the Local Distribution Company. Individual suppliers may know who your supplier is, but due to OFGEM rules cannot disclose who this is unless it is them (i.e. if Scottish Power knew you were supplied by EON they would be unable to tell you that).

The numbers to contact are as follows:

    Scotland North 0870 900 9690
    Scotland South 0845 270 9101
    North East England 0845 601 3268
    North West England 0870 751 0093
    Eastern England 0870 196 3082
    Southern England 0870 905 0806
    South West England 0845 601 2989
    South East England 0845 601 5467
    London 0845 601 5467
    Yorkshire 0845 330 0889
    Merseyside and North Wales 0845 270 9101
    South Wales 01752 502 299
    West Midlands 01384 343 838
    East Midlands 0845 603 0618

If it's a newbuild flat sometimes the addresses are slow to be updated to the national computer database, or even they don't get registered at all for a while. Or sometimes the addresses don't get updated correctly. For example if your address is flat 32 henry apartments, 24 park road, then lots of flats all get listed under 24 park road (with no additional flat information) or even as 24 henry park road, or yours gets listed as 32 park road (alongside another registration for the real 32 park road if there is one).

If the address is wrong on their records, then depending on how quick the supplier is at chasing up unpaid accounts, it could be a while before the address is investigated and corrected on their system.

Do you know where the meters are? Best to find this out, find out the serial number of the meter, and then phone up the regional number with this information and see if they can find your records from this.

Might also be worth asking the neighbours if they are being billed and if so who who was the first supplier they were registered with (often all the supplies in a block get registered with the same supplier inititially)
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)

OFGEM rules stipulate that it has got to be done through the distributer rather than the supplier. So even if the customer services rep you speak to at a supplier has access to ecoes they cannot tell you who the supplier is unless it is them. It's one of the standard licence conditions and suppliers can face significant financial penaltie for breaching it.
