From what do you want to protect it? You could thread it through hosepipe, or even high-pressure water hose, or real metal piping. Many possibilities depending on whether you want it to be water-proof, or spade-proof, or mechanical digger-proof... Better problem definition required!

TBH, Ethernet Cable isn't that un-protected in the first place. During some building works at my work place, about 6 or 7 Ethernet cables were strung from one building to another building, along the builder's external temporary walls, for about 100ft. This system worked perfectly for the year the builders were in, and all it required was a cable tie to keep them all together every few yards.

Basically, i want to conenct my satelite box to my router to stream videos. I have tried doing it wirelessly, but the signal quality drops and the playback is very poor.

So i thought i wire an ethernet cable outside the house conecting the two together. My rooter is in my study which is in the front of the house and tv room which is at the back of the house.

A lot of satellite boxes (especially chinese clones of dreamboxes and the like) have poor ethernet controllers with crappy throughput, so even after doing this you might not be able to stream higher bitrate content.

I wouldn't use bog standard catX, I'd go for certified weatherproof/external stuff. Most of it is intended for burying underground but I guess it's as good as you'll get. your main problem will be the possibility of birds or whatever damaging the cable. I'd think about spending the extra and getting armoured stuff but it does come at a premium.

There's always powerline ethernet, homeplugs. Worth considering.
