Can they do anything?

I was looking at cottages in North Devon, came across one on Marsdens, then I entered my personal details, reached the payment page, then decided not to book, but to wait until tomorrow so I can think more. I never went through with the booking procedure, however I received a phone call asking when I will be paying, and the week I was planning on booking for (the week I selected before the personal details page).

Can they do anything, i never received any sort of email and never even completed the booking process online. Surely they can't do anything can they?

What do you think they are going to do?

Keep bugging me for payment, I mean it's like if you add a product to your basket in Amazon.co.uk, and decide to cancel, they can't ask for payment as you haven't confirmed anything.

I didn't confirm anything in this case, I only entered my personal details. I am just wanting to confirm that they have no "rights" or anything like that to take payment from me (they do not have any payment details, only personal details such as phone number and address)

No, they can't do anything, it just means they've noted your booking on their system but have recognised that you haven't made payment yet. Contact them and tell them that you won't be making payment at this time and should you change your mind you'll re-book and pay in full then. Simples.

Thank-you so much. It states on their site: "Final Payment - Once the booking form is received and accepted by the agents, the applicants are liable for payments of the balance of the rent".

Anyway, thanks for clearing this up. I have booked another property on another site so have emailed them informing them that I have not booked anything, basically that I won't be paying.

What do I say if they contact me telling me I am liable for the payment, and charges, etc or whatever?

How about "Thanks for your call but I shall not be booking at this time." ?

Trust others who tell you that you are liable for nothing unless you have given them a date and either parted with your credit card number or sent them a cheque with a signed booking form; prior to that, even if you had entered a date, the booking is merely being held.

They seem to have a rather over-zealous selling technique...

Well, I had to choose a date prior to entering my personal details.

Well, as long as I am not legally required to pay anything, I am happy.

They were probably worried that you were unable to complete as opposed to did not want to (eg site too hard to use or didn't work). I had a holiday company ring me up once and email me asking when/if I would be paying, did I need help? I'd just gone on to see how much it was before I decided if I fancied it.

Some companies think consumers are too dumb to finish the booking service for something and are sat in front of their screens confused.

Just tell them you don't want rather than cannot do and they'll badger some other poor soul.
