The UK's next high street bank is...

...Metro Bank.

It opens its first branch in a few weeks, and then a second the week after, and then opening more.

Here is there website:http://metrobankonline.co.uk/

There's not a lot of info on there at the minute, but there's 2 Guardian articles about it, and I'm sure there's more elsewhere. The thing I find most interesting is that they have long opening hours and that you get your debit card on the same day as you open an account. I believe they do this in other countries, but it just hasn't happened here yet. And they'll be letting you have a deposit box, if you so wish:rotfl:

Here are the articles:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/2010/jan/30/metro-bank-future
http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/2010/jun/19/metro-bank

It'll add some nice competition for those of you in London, and it seems quirky for some reason.

(I couldn't find any discussion about it, so discuss it here):T

Not quite sure what to think about this. This is hardly the new banks people were talking about. London only - it's like the launch of a new local building society.
Need more info on products/services/eligibility I guess...

But they've got to start somewhere, and London is the biggest potential market. I'm sure if successful they'll expand elsewhere, and will be available online.

Yes but this would take years, and we're not talking 5 years, we're probably talking 10-15

I am quite happy with the Coventry Building Society. Won't change from them. Good old fashioned service.

Anything I post is my opinion, so from time to time I may be wrong. I try to provide answers based in fact, however I don't know everything, so (like all posters on MSE), take what I say with a pinch of salt.

  • On their website they show the planned programme of new branch opening which is less than electric, but Rome not being built in a day and all that.

As I understand it, the guy behind it made his name in the states by taking best practice from fast food retail into the banking sector. I'm not sure whether this is something to be encouraged by, or wary of.

Any which way am intrigued to see what they come up with...

"Do you want fries with your current account?"

Seriously though, Metro Bank may be an interesting addition to the banking sector in London, but it is difficult to assess at this stage as there is little more than the marketing blurb to go on until the first branch opens at the end of the month.
