Transferring Monies from another country

Hi all
First post but I could not find a better section for it so sorry....
I need to transfer a large amount of money from my country of origin and not sure what would be the most secure and cheapest way to do it.
The money is $'s. I have done this before by wiring directly between the banks for small amounts so commission and charges were fairly low (I think barclays charged me something like £35 for accepting the money). However, for a larger sum, I would hate to loose a lot of money in commissions and/or other charges...
Any tips or advices would be greatly welcomed.
