Weed killer recommendation please

Hi everyone,

Can anybody please recommend a weed killer they will absolutely wipe out everything but at the same time be safe to children and cats. It's for down the side of my house and the block paving down there is like a jungle as is the border. It's not connected to my grass or other areas as the garage is between them that's why it's so overgrown, you can't see it from garden. I just fancy quick fix of covering in weed killer and clearing out. Any recommendations?

Cheers

My Grandma swears by boiling water mixed with salt. I tried it on a patch of mine and it seems to be working - doesn't look like it straight away but a few days later everything starts to wither and go brown!
  • Thanks for this, will give it a try on a patch today.

What does everyone use on their block paving for the weeds that come up?
I get down on my hands and knees with a knife and scrape them away but I suppose this is just like giving them a hair cut and not actually solving the problem.

    Cheers

Good old Roundup works well and is neutralised on contact with the ground.

Yep I would like the answer to this, tried Roundup but all it did was kill the grass around the dandelions and bineweed.

Yes it would, you would need a selective weedkiller if using on a lawn. For use where there is nothing, except weeds, growing then Roundup works well. You can use roundup on individual weeds in a flower bed however the best way to do it is to put on some marigolds (gloves that is) and then some woolen gloves on top. Put your(gloved) hand into the dilute roundup and grasp the weed and run your hand up it. Repeat as necessary.

The one the professionals use is glyphosate. It goes right through the plant (weed) and into the roots. You need to spray it over the weeds and then wait until they are dead. Google for it and you will get the full details. Can't remember but I do have an idea you cannot plant anything for a while in the area where it was used.

Glyphosate has no waiting period after use - I think you must be thinking of sodium chlorate, which has been banned and had a waiting period of I think 6 months.

Glyphosphate {Round up} should do the job. It can take a few days before results are seen with some weeds, but it is still working.

You want sodium chlorate. It's illegal as a weedkiller now but you can still buy it.
