Advice needed. EDF Energy Prepayment Meter and debt.

Hello

This is my first post. Basically my husband and his ex wife have been with EDF since 2007. My husband had a direct debit set up for gas and electricity. However in Feb 2009 after himself and his wife had divorced he received a bill for over £300 for gas and £200 for electricity. He complained at the time about the fact he had not been contacted earlier, as he would have increased his DD payments, however as he was not notified before, rather than split the cost with his then wife he was left with the debt.

Anyway it was decided that they would install a prepayment meter for both and load the debt onto that.

In Jan this year after I found out that I was pregnant, we called to see what debt was left on both meters as we wanted to make sure all the debt was paid before the baby arrived, plus we had been paying for nearly a year so were interested to see how much the debt had gone down. When we called we were told so many different stories, first we were told there was no debt left on the electricity and only £60 on the gas, then when I called back to pay the gas debt I was told that we had £170 on the gas and we still had over £150 on the electricity because they actually never loaded the debt onto the electricity. We were obviously really annoyed about this and they apologised and said they would load the debt onto it now and payment terms were agreed. They also gave us £20 as a gesture of good will.

So today we receive a bill from EDF energy regarding our electricity saying we still owe £150!!! I called them to be told that they have still not loaded this debt onto the meter but would be in the next few weeks. I have just gone onto maternity leave and are income has lowered so much and we really didn’t need this. As far as we were aware we had been paying this for the last 24 weeks and were expecting this to at least be half paid.

We understand that this is debt my husband has run up, but surely this is now going back 2-3 years and we have tried to get this paid so many times. I have sent an email complaining but does anyone know where we legally stand? I know we could just pay it off in full, but with my wage being reduced so much I would prefer not to, especially when we had thought we had been paying it for over the last year. Surely taking 18 months to load the debt onto the meter is not on.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
