Can we have a GAS meter moved?

We are buying a new house, but the gas meter is in a very akward position in a kitchen cupboard, and we would like to look to move this maybe under the stairs, so its out the way. I understand we would have to go through our gas supplier/transco to get this done, but has anyone done anything like this and have a rough cost?

When I had central heating installed a few years ago the fitters discovered a gas leak in the pipe comming into the house. They phoned the gas board who fixed the pipe and at the same time, and without asking, fitted a new meter on the outside.

There was no charge for that.

I am pretty sure you are correct. Unfortunately the supplier has the monopoly on moving gas meters and can charge accordingly. Expect it to cost a few hundred at least.

Yes they will charge you after they send you paperwork where you have to draw where it will be moved distance, location etc.

Only when there is a gas leak etc and the meter is in the home do they sometimes use their common sense and move it outside free of charge.
