Housing benefit query

Hello
I am on jobseekers allowance, having lost my job earlier this year. I am staying with a relative. My mum died recently, leaving her property empty. It will become mine but not yet. I am paying the mortgage, which is very low (£150) from savings). If I move back in, will I be able to claim the interest (£55) on housing benefit?
Many thanks

Housing Benefit is not payable to home owners, when the probate has been sorted and ownership transfers to you. Look at the Shelter website to understand schemes available for homeowners who cannot afford the mortgage.
Are you paying the mortgage from her estate?0 -
I may be wrong, but I'm sure there is a form called 'MI12' that has something to do with housing benifit for homeowners. I think, housing benifit would cover the interest only on the mortgage and would probably be back-dated.
Like I said, I may be wrong, but ask about it at DWP.
Good luck.I'll get there!0 -
There is something for some home owners with mortgages, after 13 weeks. It's interest only ... but something exists.0

Housing Benefit (also referred to sometimes as LHA) is only for rented property.
The MI12 is a form used by Jobcentre Plus (and possibly the Pension Service) for Mortgage help where people receive means tested benefits (JSA Income Based, Income Support, Pension Credit, Employment Support Allowance (formerly IB)).
Having said all that, the mortgage would presmably have been in the decased's name (therefore OP may not be able to claim via JCP), and may have had a policy to pay it off in the event of death. The OP needs to check with the solicitor dealing with the will/probate and with JCP regarding any benefit entitlement.0
