can i remove the additional card holder?

I added my mum onto my first credit card whilst i was travelling in America in case of emergencies 2 yrs ago.

Anyway i didnt realise until i just read a thread that now me and my mums credit files may be linked?

Im not really sure what my mums credit is like, but she has quite alot of credit cards and loans and other stuff..

We just got credit scored for a mortgage and our broker told us we have a medium credit score, but i wondered why it wasn't better as neither of is have had any credit problems. Could it be because i am linked to my Mum?

Anyway is it possible to remove her from my credit card now? It has no outstanding balance on it, shall i just close it down? (although i do think its good to have for emergencies). Will we be linked to each other financially for ever now?

thanks

Just call the card company up and ask them to cancel her card.

Hi, you won't be linked financially at all with your mum on the credit card as having a joint account on a credit card is not possible. You are the only account holder with her as an additional cardholder, so you are the only person responsible for amounts outstanding on the account. Your mum's history will not affect your credit rating in any way from this credit card.

It works differently with Loans, Mortgages, and Bank Accounts with overdrafts. When you have a joint account for these, you are both liable for the debt.
  • Ok thankyou...its just that i read another thread on here where the person who was the additional card holder couldnt get credit for a car because her dad had passed away and the card wasn't repaid!

    Thanks for the replies!

Perhaps, she had another account with him (not a credit card) which wasn't paid and affected her credit history.

She is an additional card holder and not a joint acount holder ?

If additional then no joint tie in, and leave her on but you will be responsible for any spends she makes etc etc. But if a joint application then you are both responsible.

Not many CC's offer this but some do.

  • May still be worth checking your credit file as I (for some reason!) was linked with both my parents. You can complete a simple form and have your links removed if there are any.
