Advice on what to do with computers?

Hi all,

I have a PC I bought in 2005ish. Packard Bell with Celeron D processor and very very slow now!

I also have a laptop that I bought last year. ACER......can't remember the memeory etc but when I did look I worked out it is literally 10 times quicker than my PC!!

My computer useage was for doing my degree primarily which I have now done although will still have quite a lot of writing still to do int he future. Internet browsing and shopping and banking on line. Also use PC for uploading photos and use HP software from the printer (photosmart) for this.

So...what are my options realisitically? Would it be worth upgrading the PC? I hate the thought of just scrapping PC - not very green.

I had asked about notebooks yesterday as had though I could use laptop as main computer and get a cheap netbook for OH to use for the internet.

As i don't really save a lot of stuff or do a lot of downloading would the laptop offer sufficient memory space?

Thank you all for comments/advice.

    Hi
    I still use a PC that has a Celeron D 2.26GHz processor.
Perhaps if you tell us the specs of your computer we can give some advice.

    RAM
    Hard Drives
    Operating System

Your computer might only need some extra RAM fitting and a good clean-up of programs and viruses etc.

This is perfect advice - if you haven't upgraded your RAM then that's a super cheap option to get massive improvements in speed. Open your case and read the type of RAM you currently have (type and speed), then buy the most you can, either online or in PCWorld.

I'd consider going a step further and reformatting your HD and doing a fresh install of windows - this will make your PC like brand new and vastly improve performance. Obviously back-up all of your files before doing that!

As above, but regarding memory, storage is cheap, you can get 1Terabyte ( 1000 Gigabytes) external hard drives for less than £100.

Use the Crucial scanner to find out what memory you need.

    Then shop around.
