New iphone update..

Hi all.
i have just updated my iphone 3g to the new 4 update.. friends have done this with no problems and say it has improved the performance of their phone etc.
i have done it, and when the phone updated and restarted i had lost all my apps..however, they are there in itunes, and when i tick them all and sync phone it seems to be working away, but they dont come across onto the phone. i have also lost most of my photos that were on my phone.
i do have the new update, because the mail settings and couple of of other things are different.

any ideas how i can put the apps back and find the photos?
or even where the pre-update back up is to be found so that i can use that maybe to restore???

Not sure if this will work on an iphone (but does work on older ipods):

-Download recuva: http://www.piriform.com/recuva
-Connect iphone to computer
-Open my computer and see if the iphone is there
if not may need to open itunes and tick 'enable disk use' (or something similar under the iphone settings)
- Run recuva stating you want it to run on the iphone
This should get your photos if the data hasn't been overwritten.

Seems a strange one as the upgrade to o/s4 does not wipe the phone, I have done a couple for people and all apps, contacts, music, photos etc are still there, you could have a fault in your upgrade, the otherthing is if the phone was jailbroken then you will have lost the jailbreak and any apps with that also if the photos have been associated with a jailbroken app they would also go.
