can anyone tell me whether they all need to be plugged into a phone socket, or just one of them, and the rest into the mains?
I don't have a phone socket upstairs so it would be most useful to have one in the bedroom but not needig a BT socket....0 -

All DECT phones work on the basis of having:
1 x DECT BASE STATION which connects to the (BT) landline + mains power to run the basestation wireless circuitry and to recharge its handset's batteries
Anywhere from 0 to 5 x ADDITIONAL DECT HANDSETS which are 'subscribed' wirelessly to that base station (if you buy a set they'd usually come ready subscribed out of the box) and which just need to sit in their recharger cradle (fed from a mains socket transformer) every so often so as to recharge their batteries.
Thus only the base station gets physically wired to the landline, all handsets connect to the phoneline wirelessly using DECT standard signalling.
To have a working phone circuit the base station needs to be plugged in and at least one of the handsets needs its batteries sufficiently charged to be able to wirelessly link to the base station.
The beauty of the DECT standard is that you can 'mix and match' in that one company's DECT base station will work together any other companies' DECT additional handsets so you're not stuck if your handset stops being made, or you break a handset etc.
Significant usability differences do come in with the way different manufacturers/models handle your name/number ADDRESS BOOKS - some sets will store the book in the base-station so ALL handsets can have access to it; others will let you 'swap' address book entries between handsets; some will have ALPHAnumeric and understand CLI caller line ID and hence show your friends' name on the handset when the call comes in. Some will have backlit LCD panels so you can see their number/name in the dark and/or a noticable flashing red button so when the phone rings you can see; etc etc - ie NOT all DECT handsets are created equal as regards features, just basic interoperability.0 -

I have two different sets and base units, one unit is upstairs and the other down, some of the hands auto change between the base units if signal is low on the other, not that its happened but it still works well.0

Apparently I-Dect are made my binatone, has anyone experience of these? Its just that we had a binatone set once and it was rubbish, very quite and had to strain to hear the caller.
We went from a triple-set of Binatone MD-2000 'phones (average call quality/ Caller ID temperamental on our Telewest line/poor battery life/moody base -station searching) to these ones. The iDect are better in all respects bar no inbuilt answering machine. Thoroughly recommended.

Is there volume control on these? Our phones are about to die on us and you can barely hear the caller at the other end now.'My father told me to go for it.
So I went for it. But it had gone.'0 -
Hi
I bought a single in asda for £34.99 a week ago, its a great phone, additional handsets sell quite reasonably on ebay

Yes. Volume is great - w/speakerphone facility as well remember.0 -

Mike.
I've had a pair of Binatone DECT 'phones as part of the fondly-remembered Argos great RO hunt many moons ago. I've had absolutely no problems with them but do agree that in the past, Binatone's build and quality was debatable but I'd say that they have their act together now.
