Hi everybody, I am about to move back home with my Mum after living away from home at university for the past 3 years. She currently gets a significant discount on her council tax as it is just her who lives in the house, we were just wondering what will happen when I move home. I shall be continuing my studies so shall be exempt from council tax, however we are unsure whether my mum will loose the discount on her council tax as there are technically two people living at the address.
If anyone knows if she will have to pay more I would be grateful if you let me know
Thank you!!

no, you still get the exemption, and your mum will still get the discount. you just need to take your certificate from uni in to the council so they can make a note of it.

Are you a continious student, or finishing on course in June/July, starting a new one in Sept/Oct
If not continous then for those months inbetween the council tax situation will be more difficult as you are likely to lose "disregarded" status, (get a discount) but depending on your own income , some benefit may exist- this may be a second adult rebate ( classed as a benefit)Any posts on here are for information and discussion purposes only and shouldn't be seen as (financial) advice.0 -
Apparently my Mum also gets some other sort of Council Tax benefit that's assessed on her income, and as she doesn't earn much she gets even more off her council tax. So we are wondering if my income (ie my student loans and grants) will be taken into consideration for the income??0

Believe so long as you are a full time student, you ( and your income- loans, grants , wages) are disregardedAny posts on here are for information and discussion purposes only and shouldn't be seen as (financial) advice.0
