Tax Credits Underpayment!

My mum went back to work last June after being off ill and she was entitled to the over 50 element of tax credits for 1 year after going back to work.
A few months ago, she mentioned that she didn't think she was getting as much money as she was told by the person at the job centre. I looked at her notice award and seen that she wasn't getting the over 50 element.
She called them up and they backdated it for 3 months, but she has lost out on about £700.
I know they will only backdate 3 months if it was her mistake, but surely it was their mistake as from her dob, she is clearly very much over 50 ?
She has her final award notice in and has only 30 days to appeal it, so any info would be appreciated.

The 50+ element is only valid if returning to work after a period of 6 months or more on a qualifying benefit. If your ma actually TOLD them, it could be their mistake. If she simply assumed they would check, its hers and she wont et any further backdating0

It was the lady at the jobcentre that put the tax credits claim in for her, I guess she should go back to her then?0
