SD card problem

Hope someone can help. My SD card (Kodak 1MB) Which should have many pics on it is saying SD card needs formatting when camera (Kodak DX6490) is switched on. If I continue it warns that anything on the card will be lost. Is there a way to save the pics please?
Laptop has a built in card reader but when card is inserted it comes up as drive E and shows nothing.
