Can you get utility bills split by supplier for each tenant?

I am moving into a Flat with 4 people for university this September.

I have heard so many stories about people refusing to pay their share and as a result messing up the other flatmates credit ratings!!

My Flatmates have already agreed that all names will be put on the accounts. However, i was wondering if it is possible to get the utility supplier to split the bill equally and bill each tenant separately???

Example: If a bill is £800 and there are 4 tenants
Is it possible to get the company to send each tenant a separate bill for £200.

So i am not relying on the others to pay their share???

If so which companies do this???

I have never heard of any company that does this. Basically they bill the meter point which has one or more customer names associated with it.

From the day you move in you need to collect £x per week from everyone in readiness for the bill. The supplier should be able to give you an indication of what it could be but this will depend on how frual or otherwise you all are.

It is these exact potential problems whenever anyone asks me about student housing I always insist they pay a little bit more per month for all inclusive bills as a) students on the most part cannot manage their money and b) have no idea how their usage affects the meter.

While the PCM goes up £25 a month costing you an extra £300 a year, I very much doubt paying utility bills separately will save you any money.

To the OP though, it has got to be a collective responsibility to get all the money off everyone into an account with all 4 names on I guess, so one person cant withdraw all the money and do a runner!

    That's a good idea.

Perhaps you could get Tesco to bill each of the tenants for just 2 of those sausages delivered in that 8 pack too.

It ain't ever gonna happen is it?

You want to make sure people pay there fair share right from day one and maybe over pay for time being utility companies have been known to bill people after they moved out so make sure you get the final bill before moving on and peke record of meter readings

Do you know of any bank accounts where it is possible to put 4 names on the account?? My sis is just abotu to move into student rental, and they have found that banks will only put a max. of two names on an account. Nightmare!

OP = is there any chance you would all be able to take responsibiltiy for one bill each - as in have one in each person's name? Guess it depends how many services etc you have.
Eitther that or you fit a pre-pay meter and make sure everyone takes it in turns to pay it.
  • With regards to a pre-pay meter : We can not get a pre pay meter as this means making a significant change to the flat that we are renting, The landlord has said he does not want us to do this so we have to stay with the normal meter for the flat.

One bill each... we will have the water, electricity & gas, internet& phone line... I think (if we cannot find a company to split the bill, and we cannot have a pre-pay meter and if we cannot have more than two names on a bank account) this will be the best option...

If i manage to find a bank who does offer more than two names per account i will post it here

    Thanks everyone :)

If you really want to a pre payment just switch it its down to you as a tenet as you pay the bills. Its a simple job to change, doesn't need any construction work. Switch back a month or two before you move out simples.

Geting a ppm may be easy but might cost you. Once it is in getting it out is not as easy going on all the posts on this site.
