Am I liable to pay for 3 yrs gas
I moved into a property 3 years ago, and have never had to deal with Gas before. I can't recall if I just took over previous tennants accounts or created my own, but I never had a gas supplier or received a bill/reminder for gas. I have now moved out and was asked if I took a meter reading, only to now find out there is a gas meter in a hidden cupboard which looks like the wall. The agents have said the meter reads '0', but I'm worred that I will get charged for 3 yrs of gas. I don't even know if the property used gas, I had central heating? Any advise would be appreciated?

Welcome to the forum?
What bills did you pay?
Central heating(CH) can be from electricity, gas, LPG or oil. How did you switch your CH on? What about Hot water?
If the gas meter is reading '0' it could be that gas was disconected.0 -
Well I know for sure there is gas as the oven was gas operated and I think the heating was as well. I know I took over SP's from previous tennants, just contacted them and gave my details, but the agents are now saying there is no way that my current SP could provide both electricity & gas, and if so I would have received two seperate bills (as I only received one each month with a single amount due...no description)...hence I always assumed they were providing me with both services. I am trying to contac themto find out more, as when I gave them my new property information to transfer services, they discussed my new property gas metre being outdated and possibly needing to be updated. I am praying they have been supplying both services, but it's impossible to get through to them

There are rules about how far back your supplier can charge you and from memory I think its 12 months. Speak to CAB for the exact time limitThe Cabbage

The 12 month back-billing rule only applies if you have not had a bill and it is the fault of the supply company.
You cannot move into a property, use gas, and make no attempt to contact the gas company. As soon as you use any gas you are on a legally binding deemed contract and in the circumstances described, the tenant is at fault and liable for all the gas they have used.0 -

As you have not been honest, the back bill policy will not apply as you have made no attempt. You are likely to be charged for unregistered gas.0

No you shouldn't need to pay everything in life is free0

Is there not a slight conflict between your two statements?
It seems to me that what you are saying is that you haven't paid for any gas for 3 years, and made no attempt to contact a supplier, and now it looks like you might have a problem!0
