Hey,
I work at the moment earning £13,500 a year, I've been here over 2 years and I don't mind the job but there isn't much to do these days and I am worried that there isn't much need for me anymore. It's a small company and there are no chances at all of any career progression.
I've been visiting friends in Cardiff a lot recently and on a whim applied for a job in Cardiff, working for Admiral. It's just a call centre job doing Inbound Sales. I went for an assessment day, then interview and yesterday I heard I got the job. The basic pay is only £12,000 which is a worry but I'd get commission for any sales I make. The average is apparently an extra £350 a month and the least that anyone is getting is around £50 a month.
I want to do it, I don't have many friends and I'm watching life pass me by (aww) whereas Admiral is a very social company to work for, I could make new friends and I know that they always promote from within so if I did well there could be a chance to move up in the company. And Admiral has some good benefits
I am supposed to give 4 weeks notice at my job but I think my boss would be okay with less and the new job starts 26th July.
Am I mad for doing it?

Go for it!
Big place like Cardiff will have lots of jobs should you not like Admiral.9/70lbs to lose0 -
Call centre job? Are you sure you are assertive enough and can you take a beating (verbal I mean)?
If you are then go for it. If not apply for another admin job in Cardiff. Big city, plenty of opportunities.
Call centre and call sales especially is very very hard job... very draining.0 -

I think you really answered your own question here - you have made your mind up already! Go for it! I don't suppose theres any chance of negotiating your salary before you start? It is worth a go.. I got an extra 3k added to my salary just by making a phone call to their HR department..! All they can say is NO! If not.. try and find out what the next step forward is in terms of moving up ladder at admiarl eg team leader etc and see what you need to do acomplish your aim!? It sounds like you need change in your life so sounds perfect! Good luck!!"£$%^&*()0 -

I worked in a call centre before cold calling to do surveys. I won't pretend I enjoyed it but I didn't hate it and Admiral has a lot of perks to keep you motivated at work. So hopefully that's be okay, I am a bit worried about the sales part of it and not hitting targets though. But they train you for 4 weeks and then do another 4 weeks of extra support so hopefully I'd be okay after thenDavid_Brent wrote: »I think you really answered your own question here - you have made your mind up already! I don't think it'd be an option to be honest, there are quite a lot of people starting at the moment on the same pay so I don't think they'd be able to up one persons. I'll probably lose out on around £100 a month but hopefully will be able to sell to earn a bit more!Just because you made a mistake doesn't mean you are a mistake.0 -

Your current take home pay should be about £937. If your commission was the minimum quoted then your annual income would be £12.6k (£12k + 12*£50): that should give a take home of around £884.
If everything else (rent, bills, socialising) stayed the same could you manage on £50 less a month? Do you have a feel for whether you'd be paying more for your monthly costs? If so could you manage on the increase in those and £50 a month less? Is there scope for an evening or weekend job to make up the difference.
And finally, it's clear you want to take the job. That's a great starting point. If it all went wrong and you hated the job or couldn't make ends meet could you move back home to save money? Is there someone who could help you out until you found something else?
If so, then go for it.
Best of luck,

If you've got no ties in Edinburgh (financial, dependent family etc) then do it! Once you get family responsibilities it won't be so easy to take a chance. Don't let it be something you regret not doing in years to come (iyswim).
Good luck - let us know how you get on.

I worked there for 4 years when I left school (late 90s). I loved it and still have very very good friends from my time there.
They've been in the top 10 UK employers 10 years running. You'll have a fantastic time.
Well done you! :T:T:TI was born too late, into a world that doesn't care

Can tell you that, having worked for them, you couldn't be more wrong about Admiral.
I worked part time (had another full time job) and earned way more than £50 a month commission. And the social life was excellent.I was born too late, into a world that doesn't care

It will be more expensive for living costs, but I could JUST manage it. And that was me working it out on just the basic pay. Anything else obviously helps. There would be no problem with me coming back home and staying with my mum if it all went wrong.Do you live in a major city now?
I live in Edinburgh just nowJust because you made a mistake doesn't mean you are a mistake.0
