Council Tax

Hiya guys just wondering about this one. My lease on my flat is for 6 months and obviously council tax is paid over 10 months. I was just wondering if I decide go back home after 6 months will I still need to pay the rest of the council tax bill for the entire year???

No, you only pay council tax for the proportion of the year you live there. When you move out, phone up the council, give them the date you will be leaving and they will sort it out for you.

Not all councils spread the CT bill over 10 months, our council spreads it over the 12 months.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

Also, when you call them and agree the termination get them to send you a letter confirming it all just in case!

Although the statutory regulation is for billing over 10 months Council Tax (some councils allow more) it is calculated on a daily rate' Once you have a final closing date you will be issued a new Demand Notice for the exact number of days you have been in the property and showing any outstanding balance or refund.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
