SMTP HELP madasafish

hi, I am trying to set up my email account thats linked to my website. I have followed the instructions given by my host provider until it says the outgoing mail server is provided by my ISP.

Im with madasafish, and i have tried smtp.madasafish.com & mail.madasafish.com both throw up error messages. Im using mail on apple mac but that shouldnt be an issue.

Please help!

Trying to log into the SMTP server “mail.madasafish.com” has failed. Please make sure the username and password are correct. If you continue, you may not be able to receive any email.

Thats the error message. I am using the username & p/w as supplied by my web host. I have already been on the madsafish site & followed their instuctions. I'll have to call them tomorrow.

Not familiar with Mac mail but on some e-mail clients you don't have to put the @madasafish.com bit in the account name field. Might be worth trying.

Generally ISPs dont require authentication (i.e. username & password) when sending email through SMTP.

The link expresso gave to madasafish even shows the SMTP doesn't require authentication.

Most ISPs will only allow you to send via their SMTP server if:

    1. The recipient of the email is known as local to the server. i.e. in your case a madasafish address or a domain madasafish handle.

    2. The originating ip is a madasafish ip.

    3. You do authenticate using your username & password if the 2 options above not applicable.

I take it your madasafish account is working and you are using the madasafish bb connection on your mac for this account.

Have you tried turning on authentication in the mailbox settings?

To prove it is not your mailbox settings you could telnet to the smtp server on port 25 and send a mail manually.

Heres an example using my demon account after doing "telnet lon1-hub.mail.demon.net 25". I presume mac's have telnet. This doesnt use authentication as it is not required as i'm sending to a demon account plus it is quite complicated how to explain encoding your username and password so you can do it manually.

Stuff in red is me. Xs in italics is hidden to protect the innocent.

    My email address isnt @madasafish.com

My email is connected to my web address which is hosted by streamline.net

On the streamline set up guide it said to enter my ISP details. I thought that would be madasafish as i have broadband with them. Im I wrong?

Do you mean you have a mailbox hosted by your webhost with an email address that is something@somewebhostadress and you are setting up the account on your mac which uses a madasafish bb connection to get on the internet ?

then my original post still stands.

you setup your email client on the mac to send via madasafish
    but receive via the webhost.

Assuming it is POP3 mail your settings would be something like this.

This first lot from the webhost

    POP3/Incoming Server: pop3.yourwebhost.com
    POP3 Mailbox/username/login: yourloginfromwebhost
    POP3 Password: yourpasswordfromwebhost

    This lot from madasafish

    SMTP/Outgoing Server: mail.madasafish.com

Replace that actual names with those provided by madasafish and your webhost.

And try turning on the "my smtp server requires authentication" and putting in your mailbox and password from your normal madasafish email settings.
