Corgi registered - what a joke!

I'm just about to get a new boiler. My brother has just had one also so i got the number of the guy who fitted his. When he came round to give me a quote he said that he had no qualifications and would have to get his mate to certify it once he'd fitted it.
I asked my brother who certified his installation? It turns out that the main man from the company who did the quote is corgi registered and listed on the worcester-bosch site but sends out guys who aren't to do the work. The certification was magically done without the original corgi man actually seeing the installation! I would have thought that a corgi man should have done the gas part and checked the installation himself otherwise i don't see what is to stop a corgi man certifying and DIY installation if he trusts that the DIYer would have done a good job?

I've DIY installed boilers and I can see that someone who isn't Corgi qualified is capable of doinf the job. It has to be inspected though, not remote approved. Check that that's what they are going to do.

We had a corgi registered firm to put in our central heating - first time -and like you say, its a joke.It was`nt right, we kept ringing them up, they turned up, fobbed us off, the boiler was really noisy, so eventually we got someone else to service it after a few yrs who did a proper job.We were told it had`nt been fitted in parts correctly. He sorted it out.I complained but it was no use.

There is an inherent problem in many of the regulating bodies we have in all areas of the construction industry. Corgi is a prime example.

I personally feel there is a huge conflict of interest in a company that is a regulating body, but is also responsible for the certification of it's members.
If it choses not to certify, it has no income, it doesn't take a brain surgeon to work out they don't have much insentive to fail their own members.

The sooner our entire construction industry is governemnt regulated the better (much like the US system) this will remove all the cash business, the immigrant business and stop all the nonsence described above, the only downside is, the cost of getting any of the work done will go through the roof.

got this from the corgi website
Anyone carrying out work on gas appliances or fittings as part of their business must be competent and registered with CORGI.

therefore the person working on it must have a least a corgi certificate to work on it. You cannot have anyone work on it and then a corgi person to inspect it (what happens if something goes wrong whilst installing an appliance).

with the law the word "must" means mandatory, with no exceptions

I hope not! In my experience the polish builders are world class compared to the British ones. They turn up on time, work a full day and tidy up after themselves.

Every british builder I've ever dealt with has been a nightmare.

There is no upper, middle or lower class. Simply those that have class and those that don't. ;)

But it will happen eventually, they're nearly there with electrics and gas, it's just a metter of time until the rest of the industry is brought under so form of regulation.

And I have to say I spend a lot of my time rectifying a lot of the !!!! ups that immigrants have installed and has failed a few months down the line, once they';ve returned home, so I suppose it depends on your experience or perspective.

We bought a house that had had the entire CH system fitted by a non CORGI builder. The standard of the rest of his work in the house was appalling (looked OK on the face of it it was only when we tried to do something else that you would find 10 other jobs that needed putting right first!) so we duly reported the builder to CORGI. CORGI sent an engineer to safety check the boiler installation, investigated the builder and basically told him not to do it again. (I bet he has.) They seem about as much use as trading standards.
    I have plenty of willpower - it's won't power I need.
