6 years rings a bell in my head but I have absolutely nothing to base that on and can't even think where to check.

You could play their game - pay it in 2020:rotfl:

The amount has been outstanding for 10 years. It becomes statute barred at 6 years. A court will not uphold it, unless there has been correspondence no more than 6 years after the bill was due and within the last 6 years in which yoou acknowledge the amount is due.

Would the 6 year limit still apply if amount owing was never set down in writing and first time OP knew the amount owing was when he received the bill yesterday.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

That would probably be the clearest possible example of Statute Barring - because during the 6 year period there would have been nothing by which the OP would have acknowledged the debt.

Out of interest, what is the extra amount for?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
