Asda laptop not working. Will they replace or repair?

Hi. My daughter got a laptop for uni from Asda in Sept 09. Today she tried to turn it on and it will not go past the "windows is loading" screen. Does anyone know if she takes it back to Asda, will they give her a new one? Or send the laptop off for repair. She has the receipt, guarantee card and everything that came with it. Thanks.

Try the Techie Bored, may be a lot easier then letting a spotty mouldoon non geek losing all her work to this point.0

Many shops like Asda will replace if they've stock, but if not then refund or send for repair. You won't know for sure until you take it in.
Make sure her work is copied across to some external device (CD, DVD, External hard disk, USB key) otherwise you could loose it. This is regardless of whether it's replaced with a new unit or sent for repair.0 -

Going to be a bit difficult to do that if it won't load.
OP - have you tried loading in "Safe" mode? Sounds like a software issue to me.0 -
If it is a software issue they may not offer any remedy.0

I agree it sounds like a possible software issue.
To retrieve any work try first booting into safe mode and save all the work from there.
If even safe mode does not work get someone tech savy to download a Knoppix operating system or some other that runs from USB or CD (depends which you can get working on startup). Once it has booted from this disc you should hopefully have access to all your files to back up.
This should be your first priority before anything else if you do not have up to date backups already.
Once this is done you can then factory restore your machine and see if the problem goes away ( it does more often than not in my experience). Again you might want to ask a techie friend for help with this.
If problem still persists you can return it knowing that it is a hardware fault, and safe in the knowledge that the repair guy will find the same fault once he factory restores it.0 -

As mentioned, 'safe mode' or booting from a different OS on disc or usb key.
Agree, it's probably a software issue or corrupted file/data due to improper shutdown/power loss. It would be wise to verify it's actually a hardware fault before returning. Saves wasted time all around.
To avoid extra expense in doing such suggest calling the manufacturer's technical support line. Otherwise, find a friendly tech person to assist.0 -
Most Uni's have an IT department thats more than willing to hel out and even solve minor software issues on students laptops. I know mine did. Try to see if they can do the above for her.Back by no demand whatsoever.0
