Freesat and old satellite dish

Options
I recently got a Freesat HD box, and as I have a satellite dish, I presumed that I could just plug in and get going. However, I am getting a message saying that there is no satellite signal. Now, is this likely to be because the dish is old (it's one of the round ones - don't know exact age as it was here when we moved in)? Will I need to get a new dish, or will a new LNB do the trick? Will I need to realign the dish? If so, how can I do this - with a satellite finder?

So many questions! All this is quite new on me!

If it's from analogue days you'll need a new LNB. The dish itself will be fine.

If it's from analogue days it'll probably be pointed at 19.2e, when you want it at 28.2e, so it'll need realigned. You can get cheap tools to help with that for less than a tenner. A little box that you'll plug in (temporarily) between the cable and the LNB that will beep, with a higher pitch meaning a stronger signal. One of those and a compass and you'll be fine.

Also try to avoid using the existing cable - it will probably be below current spec for satellite use and should be replaced.

Good call. Might be worth getting a quad or 8-way LNB and running 2 or 4 lots of shotgun cable from it for future use. Saves any messing about later on, future proofs you a little.

Watch Lidl for the sat finders for about a tenner. Also LNBs and other useful gear when that's on offer.

No-one mentioned it, but get a roll of self amalgamating tape to properly waterproof the connections at the dish end..you don't want water getting in there. :) IT forms a rubber boot after a while to protect the vulnerable areas. Amazon have it cheap and the tool on here can get a deal.

I'm still using the previous house owners analog sat cable for digi Freesat
Will only replace when it stops working or if I need dual LNB cable as its a very long run
