Hi,
I work full time 35 hours a week, I'm considering getting an additional part time job evenings/weekends to suplement my income.
Do I need to inform my existing employer of a second job? How is the tax worked out - would I need to inform revenue and customs that I have two jobs or would this be done automatically by a new employer when i submit the P46?
Thanks

You don't need to inform your new employer.
As far as I know, you are taxed a higher percentage on your main job.
Revenue & customs would be informed of your new employment, but it is a good idea to inform them yourself as in my experience they can get misinformed of which job is your main income, and could end up taxing you near your entire pay from your higher paying job!!0 -
You might need to inform your existing employer - check your contract to see if anything about a second job is mentioned. If the job is in the same field as your main employment, you might not be able to take it (depending, of course, on what your main job is - working for a rival company is usually a no go).
You should inform your second employer that it is a second job so that they can tax you at the full 20%, assuming that you use your full tax allowance in your main employment.
You also need to be careful of sufficient rest - I think that there is some legislation that says you shopuld have eleven hours between shifts, but I don't know if this refers to shifts in just one job, or if it also takes second jobs into consideration.0 -

You are not taxed at a higher % (unless you go into a high income tax bracket), but you won't have any personal allowance applied to the second income earned, because you will have used it in your first job.0 -
When you start a new job you will either have to provide a P45 (which you can't as you are still working). Or fill in a P46. In the P46 you will tick the box saying this will be a second job.
You will then pay tax on everything you earn as your personal allowance will be used in first job.0 -

Working Time Regs include 48-hour maximum working week - unless you opt out. As the OP works 35 hours in the full-time job, they shouldn't work more than an additional 13 hours a week on average - unless they have signed an opt-out with their current employer already. (Such documents are sometimes presented for signature at the beginning of employment.) It is for this reason, amongst others, that employers do often include a statement in staff handbooks/written particulars that permission needs to be sought from them to undertake outside work.0 -
Thanks for all the replies.
If I wanted to work more than 48 hours per week would I have to sign an opt-out with my existing employer and new employer as well?0 -
Hello,
I would like to ask for your help/advise as it is really hard to find the right answer. I have a full time job 35 hours a week from mon-fri and I am going to start working part time on the weekend. My annual income is 28500 and my tax code is 678L1. My question is how will I get taxed on my second job (part-time on weekend)?0 -

Your second job tax code will be BR and you will be taxed 20% on anything up to £6500 pa , after this it will be 40%, as your main wage, plus this brings you to £35k (basic rate - higher rate tax)0 -

40% tax does not start at £35k
There is a tax free alllowance that comes off taxable income before the 20% starts on the next £35k.

NI is another tax to consider.0 -
