The local council i work for has issued a letter threatening to make all 7,000 employees redundant then re-employ them on altered contracts with different pay structures. They have been in contact with the Unison Union but up till now they have cannot come to any arrangements for change. My question is- Is this legal surely you cannot just make threats like that

This seems a bit odd. Many of those workers will have long service, making redundancy an expensive option.0

Not only that, there clearly would not be a redundancy situation - otherwise there would be no need to re-employ. However, there could be an "other substantial reason" for dismissal - that the Council believes it could justify the need for the changed contracts. Therefore no need for redundancy pay to be taken into account.0
