Bananas at Tesco Express (rip-off)!

I went into Tesco Express for a bottle of water on the way home today and thought I'd save myself some time by getting milk and bananas while I was at it. Normally I would have gone to Waitrose or Somerfield on a Sunday morning.
Anyway, I chose 4 smallish bananas (I'm never hungry enough for a large one) and when I paid I was charged 17p per banana. The guy didn't bother weighing them! I hadn't realised until I checked the receipt.
When I got home I weighed them and they were half a kilo, which should have cost me about 42p, but I'd been charged 68p! I know it's not a lot, but still! Why do they do this? I've never known any other shop doing this.
So be careful - if you're buying bananas from Tesco Extra make sure you buy the biggest you can find!
And this after only a couple of months ago the price of bananas went up from 65p/kilo to 85p/kilo overnight (in Sainsburys - in Somerfield they've been a staggering 99p/kilo for as long as I can remember)! What's going on in the world of bananas!?

What's going on is simple - Tesco have realised that in many of their stores they can make more money by charging per banana! I do mystery shops in Tescos, and have noticed this in all Tesco Express stores (but not in Tesco Extras, before - thanks for the warning!)  :mad:Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0

Sorry, that should have been Tesco Express (post edited). Think I need to get some sleep!
But yes, it's really annoying! I didn't even look myself but do you know what they actually display the price as in Tesco Express? Surely they can't put a per kilo price if they are charging per banana?0 -
In a Tesco Express in Exeter, they display the price per banana and not per kilo.

I wasn't aware that Tesco express had scales...much like the 'express' tills in normal supermarkets, speed is of the essence and they really can't be doing with faffing about resetting scales etc.0

I think you will find that Tesco express are in urban areas where rents cost more. therefore they need to charge more.S!!!!horpe0

On the other end of the scale sorry for the pun but they have value banananas (Spelling) at only 58p a bag for the value bag and sometimes they stick in organic bananas too they arre sometimes up to £1.17 A BAG. THESE ARE BAGGED AT THE STORE TOO

There's a good reason for this. Tesco Express are optimised for people coming in and getting bits and bobs especially those that come in during the week to pick up lunch. Most of the fruit is charge on a per item basis as this is much faster when going through the checkout.
They also at one time did 2 satsumas packaged together. The cost of this was extortionate, but the single banana, single apple thing I am happy with. You do pay more, but as most people only buy one banana for lunch and because its faster processing people through the tills, I am happy about this.

Tesco Express used to charge for bananas by weight, but changed a few months ago. They then charged 15p per banana, which went up to 17p per banana. The extra unfairness is that sometimes the bananas are really small, and sometimes really big, but they're still 17p each whatever the size. They're cheaper in M&S!!!0

Yep, the Tesco Expresses I have mystery shopped all charge 17p per banana... (So at least you weren't overcharged.....much.....:rotfl: )
P.S. You may be interested to know (we are anonymous on here, aren't we?) that one thing MS are specifically asked to look out for at Tesc Exp is whether bananas are in stock!!!!!Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0
