No sound from netbook

This has just happened today. When I try and play music I get this message:
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly.
I'm at a loss - when I go into Control Panel and Realtek HD the 3D simulation works fine, and I get clicks and beeps just no music with audio files or movies, same with earphones plugged in.
I'm pretty clueless and can't see what I might have done wrong.

I shot a vein in my neck and coughed up a Quaalude.

Try uninstall and reinstall any sound related drivers in device management.
start-run- devmgmt.msc
Do the same for any software related to sound such as realtek
if in control panel the sounds option lets you play windows noizes, then it may be an issue with audio codecs such as mp3. try installing vlc player and see if you can play anything with audio through that.
which type netbook is it, eeepc? acer aspireone? samsung nc?
more info will help us diagnose a bit better

Media Monkey, VLC and WMP aren't working. I have mp3 and wma files and my avi and mp4 movies aren't playing with sound either.
It's an Advent 4213 netbook and has been perfect for a year up until this. I will try what you say re uninstalling and re-installing the drivers.I shot a vein in my neck and coughed up a Quaalude.

Sounds like a corrupt sound driver issue to me. Since you don't have the driver disc, you'll need to find out what type of audio chip is in your motherboard. What model of netbook are you using? If you know what type of motherboard is in the machine, you should be able to find out what drivers you need and download them.
Another possibility is that there is a hardware fault with the audio chip, I would try the software route first before looking into this though since you'll need an expert to fix it if your netbook is out of warranty. You can't replace netbook components unless you really know what you are doing.
The beeps and clicks are probably produced by the motherboard's internal speaker, so if there is a problem with the audio, you will still hear these.0 -
you should be able to get the drivers from this page: support.thetechguys.com/layout.aspx?ID={02e3e90d-6fb6-48b8-957c-0d0791d9fa4f}&CatID={cc4036ae-4b34-4379-813d-f50faf4d5885}0
