Does Plaque off work?

Scraggy won't let me brush his teeth, am going to try again later with one of those rubber finger tip things and see if he finds that more acceptable but the two headed tooth brush has him heading for his basket the second he claps eyes on it!

I have never found it to make one iota of difference - though I'm sure others will disagree.

Also, be aware that it should not be used on dogs with thyroid problems (I know this may not be applicable in your case but thought it worth mentioning again) :).

Rawhide chews and raw bones are excellent for keeping the back teeth clean, sadly they don't work so well for the front teeth which are used to hold prey, rather than chew it!

Are you using the enzymatic doggy toothpaste? If so, even smearing this on his teeth can help break down plaque. Never use human toothpaste, which contains fluoride so is designed to be spat out, not swallowed.

Bear in mind that none of the measures will really help if the teeth are already caked in tartar. If this is the case then it is best to crack the tartar off or, if necessary, get a full scale and polish performed under GA. Once starting with a clean mouth, preventative measures will give their full effect.

I am using a doggy toothpaste but he seems to hate it :(
I don't know if he would let me crack tartar off his front teeth and I don't want to hurt him.
He is 10 now so I don't want to put him through a GA, last time he had one he struggled to come round so I would do anything other than risk him.
Looks like I will have to persevere with the old toothbrush!

You could ask your vet or vet nurse to crack off the tartar. If he gets very stressed this could be done under sedation.

Aquadent can be useful - a plaque retardent that goes in the drinking water. But some dogs won't drink it, and again it won't help so much if the teeth are already diseased.

    Good luck!

Ihave always used Dentastix, however I tried the cheaper ones Tesco's own brand and my dog now prefers them. He is 10 years old and has no plaque, I have started my younger dog on them too!

I thought about Dentastix but Scraggy has food allergies (although as yet not sure what to) and Dentastix seem to have meat derivatives so not a go-er for him :(
He is also really fussy when it comes to chews -grrr! As I have found out to my cost when I have bought him all sorts of treats over the years.

Dentastix go down my dogs throat before they can have any time to do anything to help remove the plaque plus it gives one of them indigestion and is very high in fat. I dont like rawhide chews since one of mine nearly choked on a chewed one, I had to ram my hand down his throat to pull out a round congealed lump of rawhide. Since then Ive read a lot of dogs have choked on them so I dont touch them now.

I think your 10 year old dog with no plaque is just fortunate in her genes, as some of my dogs have been.
