Ryanair- Abreviated first name on ticket

Hello,
My sister is going to Dublin with Ryanair on Friday, she booked her boyfriend's ticket as 'Dan' which is what he is known to most people. However the name on his passport is his full name Daniel. I don't think it has even occured to my sister that this could be a problem but I'm a bit worried they could have trouble at the gate?
I have read conflicting things after doing a google search, some people say that they always book as Phil instead of Philp, or Celia instead of Cecilia and have never had a problem, but the Ryanair line is that the names must match, and I think they charge £70 for a name change. Does anyone have any experience of this?
Thanks, Sarah

Hi
It must state what is on the passport it will need to be changed or they will not let him fly, the other alternative is to book another seat if it works cheaper than 70 quidI am a Travel Agent
My company’s ABTA numbers are P6046. MSE doesn't check my status as a Travel Agent, so you need to take my word for it. This signature is here as I follow MSE's Travel Agent Code of Conduct.0 -
I think the gate staff might use their discretion, if they even spot it. Dan for Daniel and a matching picture should well be enough to tip the balance. Ir re-booking a new ticket is cheap enough then go for that, but I don't think it's worth spending £70 to change it.
Once I accidentally only put my initial on a booking and nothing was said about it.0 -
As it is so close to the time of travel, the ticket prices for a return are more than £70. I have told sister to ring Ryanair, though no doubt they will say she has to pay the £70. It will a hard-learned lesson I think.Yesterday is today's memories, tomorrow is today's dreams0

I have had my name misspelled (quite significantly) before by somebody booking for me, and none of the Ryanair people cared at all. I would consider risking just winging it, but in the knowledge that you are taking a risk. Really, the gate staff barely bother looking at passports for more than half a second.0

Yet again, more dreadful advice on here.
Ryanair can and will punish you for this - it is made very, very clear that the name on the booking must match the name on the ID used for the flight. If you're caught, you'll either be denied boarding, or will have to pay an extraordinary amount at the gate. Is it really worth risking? From Poland...with love.
They are (they're) sitting on the floor.
Their books are lying on the floor.
The books are sitting just there on the floor.0 -
Hi
I would recommend phoning them to change to full name. They are in my experience very nice at the call centre. My sister carol had an e added as in carole, she had a hard time at the check-in although didn't pay.0 -
I had a booking with an initial rather than a first name and had no problem at the departure gate. You may be at the mercy of the Ryanair staff member you see on the day. Choose a friendly looking one!0

I have done mistakes like that at least twice. I have called the call center, explained what I had done wrong and every time they have changed the name without any charges. They have also e-mailed a new confirmation.
Of course it has been minor errors, like a character missing or extra...0
