Slugs - how to stop them eating my Pak Choi!

Hi,
Wondered if anyone had any tips for stopping slugs from devouring my Pak Choi, which they seem to love!
I've just planted fresh seeds and they were growing nicely until yesterday - got up this morning and they've started to eat the seedlings! Very annoyed at the blighters.
Presume I can't use slug pellets near vegetable products which we will eat so if anyone has any handy hints would be most grateful....
We are growing them in a plastic trough which we sit on a low brick wall - we thought if we put it up from the ground that might stop them but sadly not ....

If they're in a trough, could you put slug pellets on the ground around the trough? I've grown lettuce in pots this year and putting pellets around the pots has worked for me. Otherwise, I believe they don't like the feel of broken egg shells on their feet, so you could put them round your plants.
Yum, I love pak choi, I might have a go at that next year.0 -
Hi Lois and CK,
Many thx - I will try circling the pot with the pellets - just didn't like the idea of pellets anywhere near but suppose it will be okay. Will save some egg shells to try too.
Pak choi is so yummy isn't it and it grows incredibly easily and quickly - in spite of those pesty slugs!
I wonder what slugs would taste like roasted in some garlic....after all we eat snails in garlic can't be too dissimilar...and would keep their population down!0 -

Ugh, I'll pass on that one thanks!0 -
There's quite a few different sorts of slug pellets available, check the boxes as some are designed to be non-toxic to wildlife and plants etc.0

Start collecting your large plastic milk containers and large plastic bottles ... Cut them in half and then cut down approx 1/2" all the way around the top so it looks like Castle Ramparts, and then fold the cut bits downwards and outwards (sorry very difficult to describe, but I hope you get the picture)
Place these bottles over the plants and bury them about 1/2" into the ground.
I planted loads of Cosmos plants into the ground 2 weeks ago, and half were eaten by the slugs, but since ive protected them with these bottles it has all stopped.
Also, as someone mentioned above, you can place broken egg shells all around the base of the plants, plus also they dont like going over vermiculite, so you could try that too, but I would give the bottles a go first. Some days I wake up Grumpy ... Other days I let him lie in.0 -
