£26 million in losses is the estimated figure for drive-offs in 2005. There are an awful lot of dishonest people out there.

Wow, thats alot. Cant believe there have been that many just drive off without paying - then again its probably the same people alot of the time!

ALOT of companies are still issued with the carbon copy swipe machine that takes an impression of the cards.

They're given to companies specifically for times such as these. It's entirely Tesco's choice not to use theirs... And you would think of all places, ie. a petrol station where you can't take goods back, that they would have one.

Yet another company reliant on all this wonderful technology..............

    WRONG
the carbon copy is only to be used when you can get manual authorisation from the issueing company but as the whole system for streamline went down you cound not telephone to get authorisation therefore the carbon copy is useless as they could not confirm that the value of the purchase would be available from the purchasers account

    Drive offs are getting worse!!

I worked Thursday morning in my local one in 2 hours we had 2 drive offs. Only a total of £17 pounds but that cost, unless they can trace the driver, has to be swolled by the garage in question. For the national companies this loss doesnt have a significant impact but for the independants this loss is hard to take when the profit margin in fuel is so low.

Cannot remember exact fiqures but a tanker of fuel can cost £55k, profit £300.

I had a problem with my card yesterday, went to tesco, spent an hour trying to get round the place, got me shopping scanned, packed it away then was told - sorry it's been declined there is a problem with the cards.
Was abruptly told you will haave to go and get some cash, was escorted to customer services while everyone looked on as i was some sort of shoplifter.
Then bluntly told well u will have to get cash out or leave the shopping here, fair enough i thought - where is the cash machine?
outside, where i have to walk in the rain with my 2 year old son, right past those poxy ride on machines, great! a lovely tantrum and chance for some more people to stare at me! then endured the same on the way back, finally nearly 15 mins later i managed to pay for my shopping whilst trying to keep ds from being run over by passing trolleys as he has no concept of standing still!
I got no sorry no nothing. thanks!!
I arrrived at tesco at 3.30pm, didnt end up leaving till 5pm!! i only spent £20 !!!!!!!!

The fact 'they had been being declined all day' got my back up - where were the signs to warn us?

I have used the card copier machine when making a mistake:o If you hit the cash button by accident:eek: and the customer wants to pay by card then just take an old fashioned manual transaction.

Most petrol stations in the US now insist that you pre-pay before pumping. This will happen here if drive-offs increase.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.

You can hardly blame Tesco for the weather or your poor parenting skills, sounds like you need to instill some discipline in your child.

who do you think you are saying i have poor parenting skills?? You dont know me or my son so how could you possibly comment.
so much for this being a friendly site.

i was not blaming tesco for the wether or the fact my son is 2years old and sometimes has tantrums -
I was pointing out what happened and the fact it could of been avoided if there was a warning.

i dont get chance to palm my child off on people so i can do the weekly shop, so next time keep your malicious comments to yourself please.

Oh and dont bother replying to this post as i have no time for people who think they r better than everyone else.

Is this not what they already have at many Asdas instead of the kiosks? Like the fast lane at other places - you draw up, put in your card, put in your pin number, card accepted and you fill with the amount of fuel you need and its charged to your card?

I think its great to be able to do that - doesnt take as long - though I guess the problems come when the card lines are having problems.

Really the supermarkets/petrol stations in question should have put up signs saying that they were experiencing problems to save even more problems when people were trying to pay.
