Anti virus, etc

Options
I am currently on o2 broadband but I find the macafee software really pants - doesn't do scans after a certain percentage. Going to remove it.

Is there a free one that will do all - anti viurs, internet security etc.

I usually use internet for web browsing, very little downloading (mostly patterns for sewing) but hubby I know goes into other places (you know where I mean).

Can anyone advise - I used to have Karpesky but I am trying to save money but if it is best to pay I will. I don't like norton - chewed up a couple of computers I had in the past.

Thanks for your help.

  • Avira and Malwarebytes together is a popular combination on these boards. Avast could be used for avira.

Not good at the moment: AVG.

After uninstalling McAffee (which you do first), then run the removal tool:
    http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507

Finally install the new antivirus of your choice.

The only thing I would change about this is to download and save, but not install the antivirus solution of your choice. You can also take a look at Microsoft Security Essentials.

Then download the McAfee Removal Tool and then disconnect from the Internet. Remove McAfee, reboot(still disconnected from the Internet) and then double click on your pre-saved antivirus Setup file to begin it's installation. Once installed, re-connect to the Internet to allow it to update it's virus definitions. Done.
  • I've just read this & wondered why The Grandmaster has said that AVG anti virus is not good at the moment? I'm using that, the free version so I'm interested to know why you said it's not good?

A lot of people reporting Trojans on MSE also report having AVG installed. Of course it could be the a high proportion of inexperienced people who agree to install the Trojans.

Do you have internet banking? Several of the banks will give you freebie antivirus suites. Barclays gives you Kaspersky for zilcho.

I did not agree to install a Trojan! AVG's link scanner (part of internet security) was useless and suggested a site was safe but a popup from the page had some trojans on it. Just to top it off, AVG could detect the trojans but could do nothing about it...

Just providing a balanced argument, as I haven't actually used AVG since version 6. :)
