N power 2% offer

Recently large ads have appeared in the Times and others papers indicating N power will guarantee a 2% reduction on their standard tariff prices until Spetmeber next year. As an n power dual fuel customer I was keen to make sure I wasn't being treated like a mug and that this applied to new business only. I rang them and was pleased to learn it also applied to existing customers!
However, when I quoted the code number of the offer, terminating in September 2011 I was told the termination date was May 2011. After a long silence on the phone the assistant came back and confirmed the termination date was correct at May 2011. She then went on to say that "The Times had got it wrong".
I thought this hilarious having spent many a long hour proof reading adverts during my career. I pointed out that the content of any ad is checked for legality and public decency by the paper but that the content remains the responsibility of the advertiser. This seemed to cause panic in the ranks but after another wait the answer was still the same. The offer terminates in May 2011.
What then is the legal position? Does sale of goods apply. The ad quite clearly prints the september date in the main body of the ad not the small print. Anyone else seen this?

If you had such a long career surely you know about EAOE? And you were told on the phone about the error - it isn't even as if any sort of contract had been agreed.
And since you could probably find an alternative best tariff fifteen or twenty-five percent cheaper than standard tariffs I am not sure where the great enthusiasm for a 2% below guarantee comes from.0 -
Thanks for not answering the query.
Yes of course I know about E&OE. I also know that many people when reading posts seem to carry forward significant baggage from some other situation to their post so I'm not too worried by your tone or your advice on prices. I will however point out that I can't spell September either. at least not the first time.
I said I spent many hours proof reading ads. I can assure you I did but I didn't say I was any good at it.
Have a good day.

"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100
