The point is that if it was invested properly initially, we could fund our social security system off the dividends.
I believe this is exactly how Norway funds it's healthcare and social security system.0 -

Were not discussing oil as an investment.
We've been discussing the news as a boost to the local market and the economy as a whole given the revenue that will be obtained from it.
If we are to discuss oil as an investment, with many people discussing peak oil and that it is a finite resource.
What is the likely potential for the price as the commodity is used up.
Let's face it, oil is required far more in today's society than silver is it?:wall:

It would be good if you could try to enter into an intelligent conversation (preferably factually based) and discuss with merit the points at hand.
It's far more productive.:wall:

I'm just back from Norway - there's no doubt it is an excellent place in terms of social care, 'the big society' etc. They did see the opportunity and used the oil money for social purposes, paid off all their post war debts and have since invested heavily in public infrastructure.
All current oil returns are invested to provide for the Country when the oil does run out - Norway has no other natural resources it can trade and before oil was found was a poverty stricken Country.
The main reason why 'if we had invested our oil money we would be like Norway' falls over is there are fewer people to look after from their oil revenues.
Norway has a population of about 4.5 million, not the 60 million+ in the UK.0 -

Can only wonder what it would had been like if Scotland had been independant.
Certainly the UK reserves has been greater than the Norwedian.
The other thing the Norwegians do is only explore what they needed to +10% ish for selling off.
Consequently, this means they should have reserves after ours is completed.:wall:
