Little worms in radishes!

I'm growing some radishes and went to harvest them yesterday but about half of them had little holes in with tiny little worms in, they are white and about 3mm long!

Anyone know what these are and how to avoid them? :(

  • Arrrgh a quick search on google has identified these to be root maggots!

Any tips on how to avoid the little blighters!

Everything we grow seems to get eaten by something!

I get the same, and in my Arcoat turnips too. I don't know if it is more prevalent in things grown in containers?

They don't do a huge amount of damage to the radishes (probably because they're sown and picked within a relatively short amount of time), but they do make a mess of the turnips.
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

no they're not! i had this problem when i grew radishes in my back garden. i put it down to the soil being clay and always use grow bags and pots for growing them now.
  • Mine are just in the soil outside. Soil is pretty poor quality but we mixed in compost

The radishes are close to carrots so I imagine they will all have been eaten

    This may help

Not come across it myself, although I get plenty of marks in the skins of radishes. They shouldn't affect carrots, the carrot fly maggots will though :D

Lotus Eater, are these not the maggots of the cabbage root fly?

I'm not that keen on radishes but had a similar problem to OP and turnips were riddled as well (both not netted).

I think these are all brassicas.

I don't really know, possibly, I suppose is the answer, as I said I've never had bad damage to radishes. Not that I care much tbh :D don't like them very much and only grow them for the OH.

They're certainly all brassicas, with all the attendant problems you get with them :D

I thought that was just cabbage and the like. :o

I have had the same problem with my radishes too. Lots of little holes in them where they have been gnawed. One radish i pulled up revealed two little white maggotty things munching away. Mine were planted in a fresh bought compsost filled raised bed. I'm trying them in another bed at the moment, but might sow some more in Morrisons black buckets if the same thing happens. I guess when we grow food outside we just have to expect that there will be a demolition job on a percentage of what we grow.
