How do I search for house in an area?

The title may seem strange but we want to look at houses within 20 miles of Lincoln but not to the North/East. Search on Rightmove and Primelocation produce loads of houses in Hull and Doncaster, not where we want to look.
So is there a site that lets me narrow the search area?

Rightmove allows you to search around a postcode so pick a postcode of something in the centre of lincoln and search for 20miles of that point. I just put in Lincoln and got loads of houses which are just in lincoln. Did you put lincoln and then 20 miles of this location? if so that's why you got such a wide response. Try limiting it to just lincoln or 20 miles from a particular point in Lincoln

    Do wide search.
Make note of EAs listing property.

Visit their website and email them your requirements (Or ring them up)

Find a point 10 miles south west of Lincoln. Search with a 10 mile radius of that.

Thanks for that, have tried the post code route but the search only uses the beginning of the post code and part of the area we want included is a doncaster post code. Will try the 10 miles south and 10 mile radius but the sites do not respect the distances.
We want a village location within 20 miles of Lincoln, shouldn't be too hard!
Plus is there a good exchange site for PRIVATE houses including abroad swap for UK house?

On Rightmove I do the search that also brings up the areas I am (you are) not interested in, then look above the first house that appears and there are 2 tabs, one shows them in a list and the others show them on a map. Click on the map and expand it then drag it so that only the areas I (you) want to see shows, hover over the little pics of houses and it will show the ones in that bit of the map.
Its useful as you can avoid areas of a town or certain streets as well.

This is exactly what I did to find a property in decent areas but doing a wide enough search. The only downside is that if there are a lot of properties found it can be diffcult to view the properties. Far better is to pick an area where you want to live, have a drive round to make sure it seems okay and just keep searching for that area till you find the right property.

Thanks both of you. We are in france so not easy to drive round! Had a look round the area last year and that is how we narrowed down our preferred area.

You can search using the whole postcode on Rightmove

Can you search on the names of the villages around the outside of Lincoln? I've got about 8 really narrow searches saved on rightmove because the general one for the whole area brings up too many houses in areas I'm not interested in. There is quite a lot of overlap with properties that are on the boundaries between the areas being e-mailed to me twice, and there are one or two gaps that I go back and check using the map method every once in a while.

It also helps to prioritise dealing with the e-mails because they give you a clue where the property is in the heading. I get notifications for the areas I really want to live in more regularly than for the areas that might have what I'm looking for but its a bit of a compromise.
