Sounds like a no win situation. So what would the life expectancy of the boiler if I switched it off in the morning for 8 hours until I got home from work, then switched it on when i needed it in the evening?

That's impossible to answer. But the saving in power by turning it off is probably less than you've expended in energy by making this post. The electricity usage in standby is inconsequential.
Control it using a programmer/timer and don't worry about turning it off.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Do you switch the TV off during adverts? Do you reuse teabags? Do you cook capellini bolognese instead of spaghetti? Do you use a manual sweeper instead of a hoover? Do you fold a sheet of toilet tissue to get three wipes instead of one out of each sheet? Do you listen to music through headphones instead of speakers? Do you adjust the brightness of your monitor instead of switching on a light?

Just a few saner suggestions for saving.

Very funny. lol. I'm not that bad. Just asking because when I lived with my parents and they had oil they switched the main switch off when not in use. I won't go into the environmental issues relating to equipment left on stand-by, but it's just a thought.

I don't know what the boiler uses on standby but I can't imagine it's more than a couple of watts. If your worried about saving energy, how much loft insulation do you have? Getting your loft insulated has the quickest pay back of any measure you take to save energy. I've topped mine up to nearly the Swedish standard. I now have 450mm. Much better than the dismal 270mm required of UK new builds. Look out for £1 a roll offers on this forum then buy, buy ,buy! You can't have too much.

    It's a combi boiler????
Yes and the airing cupboard does get hot when I leave the boiler switched on, so it is using some form of energy from somewhere which is costing money! Obviously, in the winter it will be left on to feed the central heating.

So the boiler is in the airing cupboard? You said you had the SAME boiler as the OP, i.e. a WB Greenstar Junior. If so check thay the ECO light is lit. This stops it preheating the water.
