Office 2010 versus Office 2007 and what about Windows 7

Options
Just about to buy a new laptop for work purposes. Wondering whether worth installing Office 2010 or having Office 2007? What compatability do each have with one another? What if I am sent a doc written in Office 2003 - how does conversion happen- if at all? What about Windows 7?
As you can see - lots to consider and any advice would be most useful and helpful.
Thanks in advance.

Save your money and use Open Office.
However if you want to go with Microsoft they have free file conversion/viewer programmes to convert from the earlier versions.
Even Microsoft wouldn't build an operating system that was not compatible with their flagship office programmes.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

    2003 format (doc)
    -opens on other 2003 installs
    -will open fine in 2007
-can be saved to from 2007
    2007 format (docx)
    -opens on other 2007 installs
-will open in 2003 using compatibility pack

I don't think there are huge differences between 2007 and 2010, but I'd tend to go with the latest - who knows when you'll next have the chance to upgrade.

Windows 7 is a non-issue...everything will work with it.

Agree with the bits about office. I run 2010 version and for general usage its not that dissimilar from the 2007 version apart from Outlook which now has the ribbon.

With regards to everything working on windows 7, thats not strictly true. For the most part you will be fine but we have a number of apps at our workplace that are XP only, they didnt even work on Vista. They only way to ensure compatibility with these is to upgrade to the latest version, at a cost of course! :)

Office 2010 & 2007 will open 2003 documents. If you are sending files to people with 2003 they can get a free program from MS to convert them, or you can save the file as earlier versions of office as well as different files types, such as pdf.
