If I stop car insurance, will my no claim 'discount' remain?

Hello (1st time post),
I am trying to go car-free, and have successfully done so for the past 6 months. However, I still own the car, and my insurance is now due for renewal; it is not cheap either (I'm a young adult male renting in a area full of biologically-mature men.)
The town in which I live is designed more for the motorcar than the pedestrian, yet I have happily made do with a bicycle - consequently saving and losing several pounds
Regardless, there still is that niggling doubt that one day, one day, I might need the car.
Therefore my predicament, I want to keep the car, at least until December, but do not want to pay for insurance nor breakdown cover (as I will not be using it.) If I do need to use the car, then I will gladly pay up before hand. The only thing putting me off this is that fabled no-claims bonus. If I stop paying for insurance, is it automatically lost, or can I carry on from where I left off?
Any advice / help would be appreciated.

Most insurance companies allow you to "lapse" for up to 2 years while still retaining NCB, although it is solely down to the company you do business with.Remember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.0

You can't keep it on the street/public highway if it's not insured. If you have a garage to keep it in you could do that.I was born too late, into a world that doesn't care

As said above very few companies will accept NCB more than 2 years old. If I was you when your insurance is about to expire I would contact the insurer and explain, see if they will offer an "extention", and regardless, get a letter of entitlement to NCB at that dateI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0
