If I stop car insurance, will my no claim 'discount' remain?

Options
Hello (1st time post),

I am trying to go car-free, and have successfully done so for the past 6 months. However, I still own the car, and my insurance is now due for renewal; it is not cheap either (I'm a young adult male renting in a area full of biologically-mature men.)

The town in which I live is designed more for the motorcar than the pedestrian, yet I have happily made do with a bicycle - consequently saving and losing several pounds :) Regardless, there still is that niggling doubt that one day, one day, I might need the car.

Therefore my predicament, I want to keep the car, at least until December, but do not want to pay for insurance nor breakdown cover (as I will not be using it.) If I do need to use the car, then I will gladly pay up before hand. The only thing putting me off this is that fabled no-claims bonus. If I stop paying for insurance, is it automatically lost, or can I carry on from where I left off?

Any advice / help would be appreciated.

Most insurance companies allow you to "lapse" for up to 2 years while still retaining NCB, although it is solely down to the company you do business with.

You can't keep it on the street/public highway if it's not insured. If you have a garage to keep it in you could do that.

As said above very few companies will accept NCB more than 2 years old. If I was you when your insurance is about to expire I would contact the insurer and explain, see if they will offer an "extention", and regardless, get a letter of entitlement to NCB at that date ;)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
