how will i know a cd & dvd reader / writer will fit in my base unit internally or do they come as a standard size? Are they easy to fit for a complete novice like me?

All internal drives are 5 and a half inches in size. They are a standard size.
Easy to fit?
Depends on what you've got. A tower with loads of room etc. shouldn't be to hard (it's a case of taking the cover off and either unclipping a cover or unplugging two/three cables.
The manual of your new CD drive will tell you how to do this.
As for NERO - what exactly do you want explained? Nero is a CD creation software package which allows you to choose what goes onto a CD/DVD and then burn it. Or do you want a guide on how to use it?
Finally be aware that a CD-RW/DVD Drive is Completely Different to a CDRW/DVDRW drive. The first only makes CD's and reads DVD's the second can make both CD's and DVD's.

Also, if you buy a reader/writer that is described as 'OEM' - it will cost less but will probably be supplied without manuals/instructions/cables/fitting screws/software.
I bought this one last week:- http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/-/672/879/-/3271383/LiteOn_DW1670_16X_Internal_DVD_RW_Drive/Product.html?searchtype=genreNever interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.0
