Can I drive on Provisional with my Bf in the passenger seat??
Options
I don't have my car license yet (got full motorcycle and I understand this license means I have provisional car license as well, even though there's no L on it) and I am having my first lesson in a few weeks. Ideally once I am competent I'd like to get a car.
Is it correct that my boyfriend can sit in the passenger seat whilst I drive? Obviously with L plates on the car. He has had his license for 4 years.
Thanks

If you stick L plates on then yes.
My mother sat beside me for a few weeks before I ever had a lesson0 -
Cool. My bf hasn't sat behind a steering wheel since the day he passed his test, will that make any difference or does he still count??Kavanne

Yes thats fine providing he is over 21 which he must be to have had the licence over four years. You must however make sure you are insured to drive your car and have the correct insurance for it. I know it sounds obvious but just making sure0

Don't know how old your b/f is but I think the qualified driver has to be over 21yrs. It doesn't matter that he hasn't driven for ages but if something were to happen, would you feel safe knowing that he wasn't that competent or experienced.0

I wouldn't be driving until I had had a significant amount of lessons, I just want to know I can get a car that I can use whilst I wait for my test.
He's 22 so yes, over 21. He also rides a motorcycle as well so we're OK on the highway code aspect, it's just the actual driving of the car I need to get to grips with
Thanks for your concern though.Kavanne

The accompanying driver has to be over 21 and held a full licence for 3 years or more. From what you've said, he would technically fit the criteria.
That being said, do you really think it's safe for him to be your supervisor if he hasn't driven unaccompanied since passing his test 4 years ago? His hazard perception, knowledge of current driving practice, knowledge of the laws are likely to be decidedly rusty at the very least. Add into the equation the fact that it's incredible stressful to be an accompanying driver with someone you know, this sounds like a recipe for disaster to me to be honest.
If you were to have an accident, both he and you could be liable for prosecution for bad driving offences. Is that a risk you're prepared to take?
If you want my opinion he isn't really a suitable person to accompany you given his lack of driving experience.0 -
Gawd help us.
You want your boyfriend to teach you how to drive even though he has no practical experience.......

I believe that he needs to be on the insurance as well. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

For those who are concerned, I would NOT be going straight out from my first lesson doing this, I just want to have the flexibility to get a car when I am a competent driver BUT waiting for a test (because I understand I will be waiting quite a while after I've booked, and I refuse to book a test until I am actually ready to take it).
Thanks for clearing this up for me.Kavanne

We have both been riding motorcycles, having passed a full motorcycle test, for the last 2.5 years so they are not!! In fact, they are probably better than most current car users!
Your perception of driving is from a motorcyclists so you have no current experience of conditions when driving a car, neither does your boyfriend

I drove on many occasions before my first lesson, there is no substitute for experience. I also drove nearly every day between my lessons.0
