dodgy car repairs

I have an older car that up to now has been great. Recently had a problem took it to my garage who said they could not do the diognostic test and to take it to the car dealership. Did this was told it was air flow through engine ( very expensive madam) had an £800 repair bill only to drive out of garage with same problem, turned straight back now told it was a dirty pipe and they cleaned it. (We won't charge you this time madam) Driving home problem persisted so returned it to garage only to be told it is now something else and will cost 1k plus vat. (very expensive part madam)
Garage point blank lie.
Is there anything I can do? car not fixed and not worth another 1k plus 11/2k they have quoted on top to get through MOT. (Lots of expensive faults madam) If they had told me in the first place I would not have wasted £800, the car is not repaired and garage insisting it's another fault. I know it's not but is there anything I can do. Can't afford much as I am one of the public sector on 3 months redundancy notice. I have complained to customer service but wont hold my breath.
