Tax credit question

Hi all. I've never posted on this thread before, but have no idea about benefits etc.
I was wondering if I was eligible to claim for working tax credits?

My wife is a UK resident with an ILR.
I am a British Citizen who has never claimed benefits of any kind, despite long periods out of work in the past.
I currently earn around 23k a year gross. My wife gets about 6k a year from benefits from her old country.
Does anyone know if I would be likely to be successful in claiming this and if not what else could I claim (we are currently struggling with the level of debt I have - partially due to using credit when work was dry)?

Thank you in advance for any advice.

Do you have any children? If not, then you won't be entitled to any tax credits help.

The cut off point for Working Tax Credits is around £18k so you earn too much to be eligible. You don't mention any children, but if you have any you might be entitled to child tax credits.
This may sound rude but benefits are there to keep a roof over your head and food on the table rather than to pay off debts, £29k between you should be enough for 2 people to live on.

    It's only a game

Thank you for your reply Loobysaver.
No we don't have children at the moment. Does this even apply to working tax credit?

Ok, thanks for letting me know the cut off point MrsBartolozzi. Looks like I could have applied for it when were earning hardly anything a few years back!
Not rude at all. I've been very proud about taking benefits in the past, and that's part of what's got us into this mess in the first place (I have around 22k of debt left to pay off). We live in London and it's very hard at the moment keeping up all the payments.

Can't you get a debt management scheme or something? Agree with the people you owe money to a set payment and they freeze your interest?
