I have bought a NAS enclosure from ebay, http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110552594353&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

Also bought a 160gb hard drive. Can anyone guide me on how to set it up? Is it as simple as connecting it to the router and my laptop and pc will find it automatically?

Thanks

PC won't find it automatically nope. It'll probably have a web control panel at http://192.168.0.6 or a similar address. Via that you'll be able to format it etc.

Then you'll mount it as a network drive in windows.

Secondly, how do i mount it on windows 7?

Sorry if these questions are really childish, but im new to networking.

Your router will assign it using DHCP most likely. You'll find the IP address in the router's setup pages.

As for mounting, in my computer there's a button under the address bar labelled map network drive. That's what you want.

You need to use a backslash eg, \\192.168.1.2\documents

Cheers, so i want to share everything on the hard drive, i presume i just type the IP in and this will share the whole drive?

Also do i need to map it once or on every laptop that i want to access the nas drive?

Yep, every machine will need the drive mounted.

Thanks, seems straight forward. Just need to enter the IP address and mount the whole drive.

The most tricky part will be to locate the IP for the NAS drive.

I have one very similar, £10 from ebuyer, the default IP address was in the instruction book, 169.254.0.1.

You have looked at the instructions? ;)

One thing I forgot to mention, if it's like mine and uses Samba Shares (hope that's right), then Win 7 will not play with it on the network i.e. you *probably* wont be able to see it as you do shared folders in the normal manner.

But you can access it through your browser as previous posts.

You can use it as an external hard drive via usb, which partly defeats the object.

Also it is formatted Fat32, so max of 4GB file size.
