Hi again guys and gals, I have had a go at just about everything suggested and allthough I am still operating. Weird !!!!!! keeps happening. There was a scanner downloaded with MSISafe which says I have over 2000 errors. Nothing I do even in safe mode will let me delete or reinstall. Now I am not up to speed with modern windows os. But in the old days if things got to bad you could Nuke the harddrive with a reformat, Viruses, glitches, errors everything got wiped. Can and if so how do I do this.

Q2 my vista install disk is over 21/2 years old. If on reinstall can I update it safely or would it be best to dig into the emergancy savings and get the latest copy, or would you sugest something better than vista.

Thanks for your help, all suggestions greatfully recieved, handy.

No, this is wrong. It's a 12KB zip file download containing a 36KB .exe file which enables the Windows Installer service whilst in Safe Mode.

There is no scanner. That is something else that you have downloaded. Clearly you have a malware infection.

Place the SafeMSI exe file on to a USB drive and run it whilst in Safe Mode.

Then go to Add/Remove programs and remove what you can.

nothing wrong with a 2.5 yr old vista disk for a reinstall...but obviously you'll need to download all subsequent updates again. You also may need to root around for some drivers for your particular hardware.

my XP/XPPro install disks are much older than 2.5 yrs, I can assure you ;)

Hi Mate, sorry for not getting back quicker.
Its a Dell Inspiron 1520. And inspite of what I keep hearing about Dell, upto now no problems with the hardware. 2 1/2 years old and well and truly hammered.

Of now to follow your link, many thanks from handy.
