The OP is 12 weeks pregnant already. So unless she starts on a new job on Monday and takes her maternity leave no earlier than at 39 weeks, she will not be entitled to the SMP (90% of the salary) and will only get Maternity allowance (back in 2007 it was in the region £120 per week).

It is hardy practical to change jobs now even from the financial perspective.

Surely if it is still NHS she would be?

Wouldn't know - but worth checking before making any move.

can happily move within the nhs throughout as my years service are counted can even change trust so long as I remain employed by the nhs....

Also would have to (intend to anyway but just for arguments sake) go back for at least 3 months or have to repay mat pay....

Go for the job I say, you might not have one to go back to if you are struggling for work already. Imagine if it comes to handover time before mat leave and you dont have anything to handover :( I wouldn't tell the employer about your pregnancy until you have a job offer as then the question can never arise as whether there was any discrimination in the process or not. It might be a pain for the employer to sort out maternity cover but the NHS is big enough to cope.

As an aside can you either ask for some short term objectives while the other issues around roles/job grades get sorted? It cant be any good for you to have nothing to do all day and frustrating for your colleagues to see you doing nothing while they are flat out. Perhaps volunteer for a short term secondment to somewhere that is overstretched? It would not be good for your job hunting if you had a reputation for skiving on the internet I think. It might not be at all true but could be easily perceived by those walking around and observing.

Well, I am female but I am happy to surrender my "rights" when it comes to job hunting when pregnant - because I realise what a hassle it is for a new person to start a new job and for the employer to train somebody new. I do think it is unfair on the employer not to say that you are pregnant and unfair to take a job when you only intend to be there for 4 months.

And after your maternity leave, you might then decide not to return back to work (for various reasons - I understand that the OP already has one child) - and the employer ends up even more screwed up, while you are still within your "rights".

No wonder so many employers have certain assumptions about hiring women of child-bearing age. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you, and all that you know.

If only there were more women of the same calibre as yourself :j

Right, so a person that has 5 times the posts of you is a troll because they offer a differant opinion (but not uncommon).

"FIK" has 40 posts.... I have 100ish... how do they have 5 times the number of posts????

    Does not compute ????

It looks like you are calling David Brent a troll hence why I made my comment, and looking at David Brents reply it also looks like he thought your comment was aimed at him.

    Oh sorry! :o

It was aimed at the other poster - she appears to visit many threads posting "controversial" opinions - not that there's anything wrong with having opinions - but appears to post with the intention of winding people up.

I could be wrong though... it's just my opinion :p

One point nobody mentioned is that due to people doing this in the past employers often ask on the medical part of the application if the applicant or their partner has a confirmed or suspected pregnancy. We have this on our application forms and it is lagally correct and verified by the dept of Trade and Industry as it askes both sexes. As such although we cannot discriminate on the grounds of someone being pregnant it does allow us to say hold back the job a few months or if the applicant is suitable set a start date after the birth.
